  • Common Areas: Most commonly affects extremities like fingers, toes, ears, nose, and cheeks due to reduced blood flow and greater exposure.
  • Risk Factors: Includes inadequate protective clothing, high winds, wet conditions, dehydration, fatigue, smoking, alcohol consumption, and certain medical conditions like diabetes or peripheral vascular disease.

🤒 Associated Symptoms

  • Early Signs (Frostnip): Cold skin, numbness, tingling, stinging, or aching sensation, often with a pale or reddish appearance that resolves with rewarming.
  • Superficial Frostbite: Skin appears waxy, pale, or bluish, feels firm or rubbery to the touch, but underlying tissue remains soft. Blistering may occur after rewarming.
  • Deep Frostbite: Skin is hard, cold, and numb, appearing white, gray, or mottled. Blisters may be blood-filled, and the affected area may turn black and mummified over days to weeks.
  • Post-Rewarming: Intense pain, swelling, burning, and throbbing are common as blood flow returns.

🛡 Crucial Precautions

  • Layered Clothing: Wear multiple layers of loose, dry clothing, including a windproof and waterproof outer layer.
  • Cover Exposed Skin: Use hats, scarves, mittens (better than gloves), and insulated boots to protect ears, nose, face, hands, and feet.
  • Stay Dry: Change out of wet clothing immediately, as wetness significantly increases heat loss.
  • Avoid Alcohol & Smoking: Alcohol causes vasodilation, leading to faster heat loss, while nicotine causes vasoconstriction, reducing blood flow to extremities.
  • Stay Hydrated & Nourished: Drink warm fluids and eat high-energy foods to help maintain core body temperature.
  • Monitor Conditions: Be aware of weather forecasts and limit time outdoors in extreme cold, especially with wind chill.

  • Move to Warmth: Immediately move the person to a warm, sheltered environment.
  • Remove Wet Clothing: Gently remove any wet or constrictive clothing or jewelry from the affected area.
  • Gentle Rewarming: Rewarm the affected area slowly and gently using body heat or warm (not hot) water immersion (100-108°F / 38-42°C) for 15-30 minutes. Do not rub the area.
  • Protect the Area: After rewarming, gently dry and loosely wrap the affected area with sterile dressings. Separate fingers and toes with cotton or gauze.
  • Pain Management: Administer over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen as directed, as rewarming can be very painful.
