  • Urgency: Requires immediate medical evaluation due to the potential for rapid deterioration and high mortality if not promptly managed.

  • Chest Pain: Often severe, localized, and may worsen with breathing or movement (pleuritic pain).
  • Dyspnea: Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, or rapid, shallow breathing (tachypnea).

  • Crepitus: A crackling sensation under the skin due to subcutaneous emphysema (air trapped in tissues).

  • Maintain Airway: If the patient is unconscious, position them to maintain an open airway, if safe to do so without moving the spine.
  • Control External Bleeding: Apply direct, firm pressure to any visible external bleeding points on the chest with a clean cloth.
  • Monitor Vital Signs: Continuously observe the patient for changes in breathing, level of consciousness, and skin color until professional help arrives.
  • Provide Reassurance: Keep the patient calm and warm, offering comfort and support while awaiting medical personnel.
