  • Unresponsiveness: The person does not respond to verbal commands or gentle shaking.
  • Absence of Normal Breathing: Breathing may be absent or characterized by agonal gasps (infrequent, noisy gasps that are not effective breathing).
  • No Palpable Pulse: Inability to feel a pulse in major arteries (e.g., carotid or femoral) within 10 seconds.
  • Cyanosis: Bluish discoloration of the skin, especially around the lips and fingertips, indicating lack of oxygen.

🛡 Crucial Precautions

  • Scene Safety First: Always ensure the environment is safe for both the rescuer and the victim before initiating CPR. Move the victim only if absolutely necessary for safety.
  • Proper Hand Placement: For adult CPR, place the heel of one hand in the center of the chest, on the lower half of the sternum, with the other hand on top.
  • Compression Depth and Rate: Aim for compressions at least 2 inches (5 cm) deep but no more than 2.4 inches (6 cm), at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute.
  • Minimize Interruptions: Limit interruptions to chest compressions to less than 10 seconds.
  • Barrier Devices: Use a pocket mask or other barrier device during rescue breaths to protect against disease transmission, if available.
  • Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) Orders: Respect valid DNR orders. If a patient has a DNR, CPR should not be initiated.

  • Post-Resuscitation Nutritional Support: Following successful resuscitation, dietary considerations will be managed by medical staff, often involving intravenous fluids and gradual reintroduction of oral intake based on neurological status and gastrointestinal function.

  • Activate Emergency Services: Immediately call 911 (or local emergency number) and retrieve an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) if available.
  • High-Quality Chest Compressions: Provide continuous, high-quality chest compressions, allowing for full chest recoil after each compression.
  • AED Use: Follow AED prompts as soon as it arrives. Apply pads and allow the AED to analyze the rhythm and deliver a shock if advised.
  • Rescue Breaths: If trained and willing, provide 2 rescue breaths after every 30 compressions (30:2 ratio). If untrained or unwilling, perform hands-only CPR.
  • Continue Until: Continue CPR until emergency medical services (EMS) arrive and take over, an AED is ready for use, the person shows signs of life, or you are too exhausted to continue.
