  • Benefits Over Open Surgery: Patients typically experience less pain, smaller scars, reduced blood loss, and a potentially faster recovery time compared to traditional open shoulder surgery.
  • Outpatient or Short Stay: Most shoulder arthroscopies are performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you go home the same day, or require a short overnight hospital stay.

🤒 Associated Symptoms

  • Persistent Shoulder Pain: Chronic pain in the shoulder that does not improve with conservative treatments like rest, medication, or physical therapy.
  • Limited Range of Motion: Difficulty lifting the arm, reaching overhead, or performing daily activities due to stiffness or pain in the shoulder joint.
  • Shoulder Weakness: Noticeable loss of strength when attempting to move or lift objects with the affected arm.
  • Instability or Dislocation: A feeling of the shoulder 'giving out,' 'slipping,' or recurrent dislocations.
  • Clicking, Popping, or Grinding: Audible or palpable sensations within the shoulder joint during movement, often indicative of cartilage or labral damage.

🛡 Crucial Precautions

  • Medication Review: Inform your surgeon about all medications, supplements, and herbal remedies you are taking. You will likely need to stop blood thinners (e.g., aspirin, warfarin, NSAIDs) several days to a week before surgery to minimize bleeding risk.
  • Pre-Operative Fasting: Adhere strictly to NPO (nil per os) instructions, typically no food or drink after midnight on the day of surgery, to prevent aspiration during anesthesia.
  • Arrange for Assistance: Plan for a responsible adult to drive you home after surgery and assist with daily activities for at least the first 24-48 hours, as you will be under the effects of anesthesia and pain medication.
  • Post-Operative Immobilization: Expect to wear a sling for a prescribed period (often 2-6 weeks) to protect the repair and allow initial healing. Do not remove it unless instructed by your surgeon or physical therapist.
  • Avoid Heavy Lifting & Reaching: Strictly avoid lifting heavy objects, pushing, pulling, or reaching overhead with the affected arm during the initial recovery phase to prevent re-injury.

  • Fiber-Rich Foods: Incorporate fiber-rich foods to prevent constipation, which can be a side effect of pain medications.

⚠️ Attendant Guidelines

  • Transportation & Supervision: Ensure the patient has a reliable ride home post-surgery and someone to stay with them for at least 24 hours to monitor for adverse effects of anesthesia and assist with basic needs.
  • Medication Management: Help the patient adhere to their prescribed pain medication schedule and other medications, ensuring they understand dosages and timing.
  • Sling Assistance: Assist the patient with proper application and removal of the sling, ensuring it is worn correctly as instructed by the medical team.
  • Ice Pack Application: Help apply ice packs to the shoulder as directed to reduce swelling and pain, ensuring a barrier (e.g., towel) is used between the ice and skin.
  • Monitor for Complications: Be vigilant for signs of complications such such as excessive bleeding from incision sites, severe or worsening pain not relieved by medication, fever, chills, numbness or tingling in the hand/fingers, or difficulty breathing. Contact the surgical team immediately if any of these occur.
  • Activity Restriction Enforcement: Gently remind and assist the patient in adhering to activity restrictions, preventing them from using the affected arm for tasks like reaching, lifting, or pushing.
